Course Information
So you want to become an ADI?
If you're thinking of becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Here are a few things you should consider:
- An ADI should possess the following qualities:
- Patience - with some student drivers you will have to keep going over the same things many times;
- Understanding - you must be able to understand the student needs and feelings;
- Good communication skills;
- Inter-personnel skills - you must be able to deal with the public in a non-aggressive manner.
- Creativity - sometimes you have to be creative to put a point across.
The Legal Requirements:
To begin with, you must have held a full driving licence in category B (manual cars) for at least 4 of the last 6 years. You must not have been disqualified during this time.
You must also be a 'fit and proper' person. This relates to convictions not spent under the rehabilitation of offenders' act.
Be able to read a car number plate at a distance of 27.5m (90') where letters and numbers are 79.4mm (3.1/8") tall in good daylight, with the help of glasses or contact lenses if worn.
The Tests:
Before you can train people to drive, you must pass three main qualifying exams. You have up to 2 years to qualify from the date you pass the ADI Part 1 test.
- Theory test /Hazard Perception Test - ADI Part 1
- Test of driving ability - ADI Part 2
- Test of instructional ability - ADI Part 3

To become an Approved Driving Instructors (ADI) courses are available in: Blackrod, Horwich, Westhoughton, Aspull, Whelley, Adlington. Covering most areas of Bolton, Farnworth, Wigan and Chorley.
